Defending fish habitat from development

The Fraser River between Hope and Mission provides vital but endangered habitat for wild salmon and sturgeon. We are fighting to protect it from development, and while 2024 delivered a major win, there is much work ahead.

Highlights from 2024

  • In a landmark win, Carey Island was bought and permanently protected by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. We played a crucial role in helping halt development on the 248-hectare island, one of the largest in the Heart of the Fraser.
  • To combat industry misinformation, we released a report on the impacts of gravel extraction on salmon and their habitats with a focus on the Vedder River, highlighting more effective flood solutions that support fish.

Looking ahead, we will:

  • Continue working with First Nations and other allies to identify and conserve important floodplain habitats in the Heart of the Fraser.
  • Support further research into gravel river systems and champion nature-based flood defences that enhance salmon habitats.
