Getting the fish farms out of the water

Factory fish farms spread parasites and disease to our wild salmon and harm other marine wildlife. With an upcoming election, 2025 will be an essential year for rallying public support to get all open net-pen fish farms out of B.C.’s coastal waters for good.

Highlights from 2024

  • Following our efforts to expose its illegal operations, AgriMarine’s semi-closed fish farm in Lois Lake, near Powell River, was fined $350,000. The farm has ceased operating and all equipment must be removed by September 2025.
  • Acting on a tip, we investigated and raised the alarm about a massive die-off at a remote salmon farm in Muchalat Inlet. We confirmed with DFO and got the word out that multiple farms in the region were experiencing similar die-offs.
  • We intervened in federal court, represented by Ecojustice, to successfully defend the decision to keep salmon farms out of the Discovery Islands.
  • Safe Salmon continues to be a key platform bringing together British Columbians who oppose factory fish farms in B.C.

Looking ahead, we will:

  • Keep pressure on the federal government to uphold their promise to ban all open net-pen salmon farms in B.C. by mid-2029. Over the next year and beyond, we’ll work hard to ensure this ban is written into law and fully implemented, no matter who is in government.
  • Continue to chase leads on rule-breaking fish farms, intervene in court cases, support Indigenous allies and rally the public to get fish farms out.
