Water for Fish

Securing our watersheds for salmon and people

Healthy watersheds give us healthy salmon runs and stronger communities that are better protected from drought and flooding. We are defending habitat and clean water in B.C.’s salmon watersheds.

Highlights from 2024

  • Our popular CodeBlue BC campaign spurred over 9,600 citizen emails to decision-makers calling for increased investments in watershed security and reached over a half million social media accounts with stories about B.C.’s watersheds.
  • Through the Watershed Security Coalition, we secured signatures for the Watershed Security Pledge from over half the elected candidates in the 2024 provincial election, with support from all parties.
  • We launched a citizen letter-writing campaign that generated over 600 submissions pushing the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency to evaluate the use of 6PPD, a highly toxic tire additive that kills coho salmon and other aquatic life.

Looking ahead, we will:

  • Keep pushing the provincial government to safeguard our watersheds by getting tougher on water wasters and polluters, increasing the B.C. Watershed Security Fund to at least $1 billion, and creating a network of local watershed boards for communities to manage and defend their home waters.
  • Host a series of workshops to teach watershed defenders how they can pursue private prosecutions against environmental violators.
