On September 27th it’s World Rivers Day! This year’s theme is “Waterways in our Communities,” and we are celebrating by hosting a river-themed photo contest.

Waterways provide important habitat for salmon and other aquatic species, as well as birds and other wildlife. Protecting and preserving these areas helps to promote biodiversity and ecosystem benefits. Healthy waterways also provide immense social, ceremonial and health benefits for humans. We want to see how waterways improve your quality of life. Starting today, until September 27, send us a photo of yourself, family (including pets), or friends enjoying your local waterway.

To submit photos, please fill out this form. Also included is a model release form. To be entered in the contest, please ensure anyone identifiable in your photographs has filled out a model release form.

And don’t forget to rename your images to include your name and the location the photo was taken.

We have some awesome prizes for our contest winners! These include:

  • A Patagonia Nine Trails 28 litre hiking backpack;
  • A $100 gift certificate for Hook & Vice;
  • 3 High-quality wall maps of BC;
  • A swag pack from Yellow Dog Brewing consisting of a t-shirt, growler, koozie and $20 gift card
  • Additionally, we have Dragonfly fly-fishing reels and a matching fly set and book to be given to the best fishing images!

If you are on Facebook, please join the Facebook event and connect with others planning to enter the contest.

This year marks a special anniversary for World Rivers Day. It has been 40 years since the founding of BC Rivers Day, which eventually evolved into World Rivers Day, now one of the world’s largest environmental events. Due to Covid-19, we can’t gather together to celebrate, but we hope you will be able to visit your local waterway and celebrate in your own way.

We can’t wait to see your photos!
