Watershed Watch Salmon Society is a respected and influential non-profit organization that promotes wild salmon and watershed conservation in British Columbia. For over 20 years we have been boosting habitat protection and restoration, sustainability in salmon fisheries, reform of B.C.’s salmon aquaculture industry, and the implementation of the laws and policies that protect wild fish and the waters they swim in. We are a federally registered charity with a strong track record as a science-based watchdog, working with diverse allies and rallying the public to protect wild salmon and watersheds in B.C. We have offices in Coquitlam and Victoria, and an engaged base of supporters across the province. 

Our Water & Fisheries Specialist will lead our advocacy to improve the management of salmon fisheries and freshwater in B.C.

Salary: Negotiable and commensurate with experience. Approximate range: $50,000-60,000 per year, plus benefits.

Job type: Full-time, permanent (one-year employment contract with possibility of extension and performance-based increase).

Location: Lower Mainland or Victoria, B.C.

 

  Qualifications 

  • You want to make a positive difference for B.C.’s wild salmon and watersheds and the many people who hold these things dear;
  • Proven experience as a successful conservation advocate;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Formal training or work experience in biology, environmental sciences, resource management, or a related field AND/OR formal training or work experience in journalism, communications, or a related field (Master’s degree or equivalent experience);
  • Competent working knowledge of freshwater and wild salmon management in B.C.;
  • You are self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, collaborative, and flexible;
  • You are a strategic, rational thinker and creative problem-solver who seeks out evidence when forming opinions and making decisions;
  • Experienced (minimum 3 years) and proficient in leading or working with teams in advocacy campaigns;
  • Experienced and capable in working with First Nations, fishing groups, government, community stewardship groups, and other important players in the world of salmon and freshwater management;
  • Comfortable working with a team that is spread throughout the lower mainland and Victoria.

 

Responsibilities

  • Work with our team and our allies to plan and execute engaging campaign concepts that will influence decision-makers and rally your fellow citizens to take action for wild salmon and clean water;
  • Build collective power by leading the coordination of our collaborative initiatives with other conservation groups (i.e., Pacific Marine Conservation Caucus, Code Blue BC);
  • Understand complex science and policy issues around wild salmon, and communicate those issues effectively to public and political audiences in multiple formats and venues (e.g., via news media, social media, public presentations);
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships among First Nations, government, fishery stakeholders, academia, the conservation community and other vital participants in B.C. salmon management;
  • Support our communications manager and engagement staff in building our supporter base and inspiring our supporters to take action for salmon;
  • Represent and/or support Watershed Watch and the Pacific Marine Conservation Caucus in multi-stakeholder management processes and other government relations;
  • Lead or assist in representing Watershed Watch and our positions on freshwater and fishery management in discussions with elected officials and government staff;
  • Interact with members of the public regarding water and fishery management, in person and online;
  • Assist in fundraising efforts, including grant writing and reporting and donor outreach;
  • Other tasks as required to support the success of the organization and our work for wild salmon;
  • Continually strive for excellence and improvement in all that you do;
