Salmon Day 2024
On a sunny fall day in October, Watershed Watch cohosted our second-annual Salmon Day in partnership with Kwikwetlem First Nation, Resilient Waters and Zachary Sherker of UBC’s Pacific Salmon Lab.
Held at ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park (pronounced tla-hut-um and formerly Colony Farm Regional Park) the event celebrates wild salmon and helps spread awareness of important research that is being conducted in the park. UBC researchers are looking at how salmon are moving between habitats impacted by different types of flood control infrastructure. The information they gather will provide important insights into how our flood infrastructure helps or hinders the movement of salmon and will help guide future flood management decisions to better protect wild salmon while also defending communities from flooding.
A big thank you to our cohosts, volunteers and attendees as well as our event sponsors the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund, Metro Vancouver and Metro Vancouver Regional Parks Foundation and our exhibitors Kwikwetlem First Nation, Pacific Salmon Foundation, MetroVancouver Regional Parks Association, Coquitlam River Watershed Society and Colony Farm Parks Association.

Rivers Day paddle
On Sunday, September 22, water advocates from a diverse range of organizations came together to celebrate the 44th annual B.C. Rivers Day. The crew paddled 22 kilometres of the Fraser River, from Langley to Coquitlam. Watershed Watch staff were grateful for the invitation to take part. The paddle provided many with a unique opportunity to experience the river from a new perspective. We saw seals, a jumping sturgeon, herons, racoons and more as we made our way downstream. The tides were in our favour and the rain held out until the last few kilometres. Check out some of the photos from the B.C. Rivers Day paddle below!
A big thank you to the Rivershed Society of B.C. and the Watershed Security Coalition for organizing this great event.
