Tell Canadian decision-makers to invest in salmon-friendly flood defenses today!

Right now, British Columbians have a historic opportunity to restore high-value salmon habitats as they upgrade their failing flood protection along the lower Fraser River. Thousands of kilometers of formerly prime salmon habitat are being needlessly blocked off by outdated flood control structures. The type of flood protection they build can either destroy or restore struggling salmon runs, including Fraser Chinook salmon, which are essential prey for our endangered Southern resident killer whales. Canadians need to replace fish-killing flood pumps with ones that are safe for salmon, and install modern floodgates that don’t block fish passage when the river isn’t flooding. They also need to invest in natural flood defenses, like strategic relocations, setback dikes and water storage through wetland restoration. Canadian leaders need to choose the right path.
