Join us for B.C. Wild Salmon Day!
September 24, 2024
By: Meghan Rooney
Join Watershed Watch, Resilient Waters, and Kwikwetlem First Nation for a free, fun, family-friendly Salmon Day at ƛ̓éxətəm (tla-hut-um) Regional Park on Saturday, October 5. Learn how we are working to reconnect waterways to improve salmon’s ability to access their habitats.
Salmon Day is an educational event that will feature:
– Interactive displays by community partners
– A fish identification session
– A DIY salmon detector station
– An opportunity to adopt your own PIT-tagged salmon so you can get updates about their journey
We will also be joined by PhD student Zachary Sherker, of UBC’s Pacific Salmon Ecology and Conservation Laboratory, whose research is helping us better understand how different floodgate designs in ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park help or hinder the ability of salmon to access key habitats. The study is building the case for greater investment in fish-friendly flood control infrastructure that will help to reconnect over 1,700 kilometres of salmon habitat that is currently cut off to salmon in the Lower Fraser region.
Activities will run from 11 AM to 3 PM. At noon community leaders will talk about some of the awesome work being done to take care of salmon in the Tri-Cities area.
You can RSVP here, or just come down on October 5 and join us for this free community event.
Event exhibitors include:
Kwikwetlem First Nation
Watershed Watch Salmon Society
Pacific Salmon Foundation
MetroVancouver Regional Parks Association
Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable
Colony Farm Parks Association
How to get there:
We will be hosting this event next to the community gardens at ƛ̓éxətəm (Colony Farm) Regional Park. Park in the main parking lot at the end of ƛ̓éxətəm Road.
The park has great walking and biking paths, so bring your bike and explore the many trails.
Thank you to our sponsors: Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund, Metro Vancouver and Metro Vancouver Regional Parks Foundation.

Resilient Waters, a partner project of Watershed Watch, is working to improve how we manage for floods to better defend wild salmon and communities.
UBC’s Pacific Salmon Ecology and Conservation Laboratory is committed to the study of salmonid ecology, behaviour and physiology, and to providing management systems with information needed for the conservation and sustainable use of fish resources.
