Beach Clean-ups Keep Plastic Off Our Plates
January 31, 2019

Ellika, our engagement coordinator, and a team of volunteers donned their ugliest Christmas sweaters to help clean up garbage at English Bay in partnership with Surfrider Foundation over the holidays. In just a couple hours, they collected 4600 cigarette butts, 29 plastic straws, 28 aluminum cans, and much more.
Garbage on the beach isn’t just a hazard for beachcombers, it can have serious impacts on marine wildlife including salmon. Salmon and other ocean dwellers directly or indirectly consume microplastics, which can cause intestinal damage and leaching of chemicals into their bodies. This isn’t something you want appearing in your next salmon dinner!
In 2019, we’ve made resolutions to reduce our plastic consumption and help keep our local waterways clean. Join Ellika at a riverside cleanup this spring!
