Join us for Urban Salmon documentary launch!
February 8, 2021
By: Meghan Rooney
Join us on March 4, at 7:00 p.m., for the launch of the Urban Salmon, a short documentary by photographer Fernando Lessa about the return of wild salmon to urban Vancouver waterways.
150 years ago there were at least 50 salmon-bearing streams in the area that is now Vancouver. Over the years, many of these streams disappeared, and wild salmon were almost extinguished from the cityscape. Thanks to the passion and dedication of streamkeepers in the metro Vancouver area, urban streams are being restored and wild salmon are returning to our backyards.
Fernando Lessa is a Brazilian born photographer based in North Vancouver. Best known for his conservation and ecology photography, Lessa has documented wildlife around British Columbia and beyond. He first began documenting urban salmon in 2016.
The film will screen on Youtube at 7 p.m. After the screening, at 7:20 pm, join us on Zoom for a Q & A session with Fernando Lessa, photographer and Urban Salmon Project founder, Watershed Watch’s Lina Azeez, SFU’s Dr. Jonathan Moore, SFU’s Dr. Allison Kermode and Vancouver historian and author, Bruce Macdonald.
Event details:
Date & time: March 4, 7:00 p.m. PST
Film screening on Youtube at 7:00 p.m.
Q & A discussion on Zoom at 7:20 p.m.
