Elanor Teel: Some ideas for celebrating Earth Week
April 21, 2022
By: Meghan Rooney
Are you looking for some ways to celebrate Earth Day weekend? Come join us at one of these events on Saturday April 23.
Three of these events are focused on restoration and invasive species removal. You may be wondering, how does invasive species removal help wild salmon? Removing invasive species helps support the structure and integrity of the ecosystem. We need to support biodiversity in the riparian habitat and native species attract the insects that salmon feed on.
Planting day at Corbould Park, Chilliwack, April 23
Join Watershed Watch and local grassroots volunteers from Friends of Camp/Hope Slough for a planting day at Corbould Park in Chilliwack. Please be prepared to work. It could be muddy, so rubber boots or work boots are recommended. Bring gloves, shovels, and hand tools if you have them. We’ll bring some extras for those who need them. This is rain or shine. The plants we have need to go in the ground! Register here.
NB. Thank you to the City of Chilliwack for partnering with us on this event.
Spring River Cleanup on Vedder River, Chilliwack, April 23
We are so excited to be back at the Chilliwack Fish and Game Club for our Spring River Cleanup on Saturday, April 23. Registration is open from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and we will be supplying garbage bags, gloves, and pick-up sticks. We will ask that all garbage be dropped off at the Fish and Game Club no later than 1:30 p.m. Visit the Facebook event.
For those of our Adopt-A-River folks who have sections on the lower Vedder River, we are working on having a utility trailer at the Great Blue Heron Reserve for you to dump your garbage. We have a couple prizes to hand out thanks to our good friends at Pic-Eco Refills in downtown Chilliwack.
If you are not feeling well, we ask that you stay home and join us another time.
P.S. We are looking for a hardy group of folks to tackle some challenging terrain and have 4×4 vehicles. For more info, email us at info@cleanrivers.ca
Wild Salmon Rally, Campbell River, April 23
A rally in Campbell River is happening this Saturday. Come out and support the Minister of Fisheries in making the right decision– to not renew factory fish farm licences when they expire on June 30, 2022. Gather at the Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre at 2 p.m. Visit the Facebook event for more information.
Restoring Swan Lake, Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary, Victoria, April 23 (and weekly)
Join our volunteer crew at the beautiful Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary. Spend a fun morning pulling up English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, privet, and other invasive species all while learning species ID. After your hard work, enjoy a delicious home-baked treat as a thank you. These work parties happen every Saturday and are a great way to get outdoors while giving back to the community and wild salmon!
Space is limited, so please register to secure your spot.
