The beginning of July marked a number of firsts, including our first in-person event in 17 months! Our engagement manager, Roxanna, and a group of twenty volunteers spent a Saturday morning removing seed pods from invasive yellow flag iris plants growing along Bell Slough in Chilliwack.

After such a long wait, it feels great to announce we have officially restarted in-person volunteer opportunities and that we have a number of events in the works!

The following weekend, we co-hosted our first public event since the pandemic began, a series of showings of Uninterrupted, a virtual reality experience highlighting the beauty and struggle of salmon migration. The event, which aims to bring salmon into the heart of the city, took place under the Cambie Street bridge in Vancouver. It was a huge success, with sold out tickets and we talked to all sorts of attendees about our campaigns, our concerns, and our shared appreciation for how integral wild salmon are to life in B.C. We’ve also resumed volunteer opportunities in the field, with stellar support from volunteers Rachel, Travis and Port Coquitlam City Councillor Laura Dupont, who joined us last week as we collected fish and water quality data for the Resilient Waters project. Read Meghan’s latest fieldwork update.

In the coming months, we will have a number of opportunities ranging from larger in-person events such as cleanups, to smaller group volunteer work, including restoration site maintenance, data collection, to continuing virtual or socially distanced events such as our weekly volunteer meetups, webinars and more. We look forward to connecting with you again in person!
